Is Patong Beach the Place to Go in Phuket, Thailand?

Phuket, the largest island of Thailand, is nearly the size of Singapore and is located in the green waters of the Andaman Sea at around 850 kilometers south of the capital, Bangkok. As Thailand's most popular beach destination, whether the visitor is looking for a quiet place or an active area with plenty of colorful night life, Phuket island has everything someone would want on a holiday.

With beautiful beaches and some of the best resort hotels, the island is ideal to create a delightful ambiance for a truly memorable vacation. Phuket has 2 main seasons, which are the rainy season from May to October and the hot season from November to April. During the rainy season, showers last not more than two to three hours in a day and many sunny days still can be enjoyed.

The most favored beaches are situated in Bang Tao, Kamala, Karon, Kata and Patong. In addition to the beaches and night life of the island, many other activities can be enjoyed such as water sports, visit of temples, treks in the forest or motorcycle rides. Phuket also hosts one of the most famous International soccer 7s tournament in south-east Asia in November.

Bangtao beach is one of the longest beach in Phuket island and a luxury resort area dominated by a Laguna complex, a massive luxury-hotel development with golf course. Swimming is excellent during the dry season, and at the end of the bay is a smaller bay, which is nearly completely enclosed, with some fine corals.

Kamala beach, which is mostly a fishing village, is less crowded even during the summer season. A two kilometers long quiet beach where fishermen can be seen casting their net near their boats, is the only entertainment of the area together with the buffalo herds that come down sometimes to cool off.

Patong beach is the leading tourist district for water sports activities such as snorkeling, parachute flying, windsurfing, jet-skiing and sailing. Patong has the most unbelievable nightlife in all Phuket. Pubs, restaurants, go-go bars and discotheques are dispersed all over a 3,000 meter long beach front. The greatest concentration of night places are in Soi Bangla, where pubs with live music, bars with local entertainers and an important choice of excellent restaurants can be found.

Karon Beach is a lot quieter than Patong and is the second largest tourist beach in Phuket. A long and broad almost unspoiled beach with a very white sand can be enjoyed there. A superb coral reef is extending towards Kata and Bu Island at the southern point. Restaurants, bars and tour companies, but also non-hotel businesses are located at the north end.

Phuket has its own International airport and can be reached directly from overseas or from Bangkok with a 70 minutes flight.

How Safe is Phuket For Travel?

Phuket is one of Thailand's most popular tourist destinations, and yet visitor numbers are well down on previous year. The beaches and streets in Phuket are quiet and businesses are beginning to feel the strain. Thailand's political problems have been well documented by the media, so much so that the country is portrayed as being in complete anarchy. Although the problems have been centered in Bangkok, they have impacted Phuket. But what's the reality of the situation? Should tourists be wary of traveling to Phuket?

The short answer is "no". For a bit of perspective, Thailand has had numerous problems over the years, from coups to bombings. However, it was only the tsunami that really affected tourism in the long run. Thailand's internal problems usually create a few short-term ripples and the media writes of chaos in the streets, but for people living in Thailand, they will tell you that life goes on as usual.

In Phuket, tourism is way down. Hotels are nowhere near full and people on the island are saying that the effect on the industry will be worse in the long term than the tsunami. It's such a dire situation, but it's also completely unnecessary. Travel advisory warnings also don't help.

If you were to visit Phuket right now you'd see a peaceful island. There are no more dangers than normal and everything is safe. There's no fighting in the streets and tourists aren't being victimized or attacked. In fact, there's probably never been a better time to visit Phuket because the island is less crowded than usual.

The beaches are still there and the popular sites are waiting for visitors to trickle in. Of course, travelers should still exercise the same caution they would when visiting Phuket any time of the year. Traveling alone on a motorcycle at night isn't a good idea and care should be taken when out and about. But don't let the news reports put you off a trip to Phuket.

It's a sad state of affairs, but hotel-booking websites have been reporting a huge decline in bookings. The same is true of airlines, who are now throwing out offers left, right and center to entice people to visit Thailand. There are bargains to be snapped up at the moment.

So if Phuket is safe for tourists, then what about Bangkok, where most of the trouble has been? There have been protests and airport closures and all sorts. However, unless you had a plane to catch during that time, if you were in Bangkok, you wouldn't have noticed much out of the ordinary other than when you turned on the news. Everything carried on as usual. It always does.

After the most recent coup, the tanks and soldiers became a tourist attraction. The resultant protests were mostly jovial affairs with picnics and concerts. Some media reports were speculating that Thailand was about to become a bloodbath, similar to revolutions of the past, but such events didn't materialize.

Forums, blogs and phone lines have been inundated with people asking if Phuket is still safe for travel. It is safe, and it likely will be for a long time to come.

Norway Fjords, Mountains & Wildness - Exploring Norway's Natural Beauty

Norway is named the best country to stay in the world by United Nations. Besides being a great place to live, it is also a popular tourist destination for those who want a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. The famous tourist attractions are the museums, cultural heritage, monuments, fjords, mountains, and wildness.

One great way to tour Norway fjords is to join a cruise and explore the farms and villages in the fjord areas. Some villages can only be reached by ship during winter. You will definitely be amazed by the natural beauty and tranquility of the surrounding during your visit.

You can also enjoy the spectacular view of Norway's wildness by traveling on two of the world's most popular rails, the Flam Railway and Bergen Railway. The Bergen train is the main line commuting Osla with Bergen and travels across the Hardangervidda highland plateau and National Park. The Flam Railway is a side line of the main Bergen Railway, and it is one of the steepest railway lines in the world. Its highest attitude is at 1,222 meters above sea level.

While cruising in these areas, you will see the amazing Norway fjords, waterfalls cascading down from the rocky hillsides and snow-topped mountains. At the foot of the mountains is the beautiful Flam Valley. From the valley, you can enjoy the magnificent scenery of the waterfalls, rivers and snow-clad mountain peaks from a different viewing angle.

The most popular Norway fjords are the Geirangerfjord and Naeroyfjord, and both are listed in the Unesco's World Heritage Site. The Naeroyfjord, a spur of the large fjord of Sognefjord, is about 17 kilometers, and it is attributed as the most beautiful fjord in the world.

The famous Norway In A Nutshell tour will provide you a complete experience with train ride, fjord cruise and road journey going up the hill so that you can explore Norway in a limited time. There are plenty of tour packages offering from one day to a week itinerary to suit your traveling schedule, and you can start your Norwegian journey either from Bergen or Osla.

For more traveling tips and information, I would recommend checking out the Norway fjords.

Little Know Grand Canal in China

China, with nearly 5,000 years of recorded history, is the cradle of one of the oldest civilizations in the world and is a fascinating land filled with rich cultural heritages and stunning natural beauty. Chinese people have long years' experience in managing their water system and like to name their canal with the second name of the person who was in charge of building the canal at that time.

There are three famous water conservancy projects in China and the oldest one is as early as the 486 B.C. Although established long years ago, those water conservancy projects still play important roles in local peoples' life. Let's have a look of them:

Grand Canal

The Grand Canal, is a marvelous irrigation project of ancient China as well as the oldest and the longest man-made canal in the world. The canal comes from Beijing in north to Hangzhou in south with stretching 1,794 kilometers long and surpasses both the Suez and Panama canals. After the canal was built, it makes 6 provinces linked together and flows to the Haihe, Yellow, Huaihe, and Qiantang and Yangtze River.

As early as the 486 B.C., the canal was first cut near Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, to make the waters of the Yangtze River and Huaihe link together. And from 7th century in the Yuan dynasty to 13th century in the Sui Dynasty, It was finally become the Grand Canal which was the major transport artery between north and south China during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.

The Grand Canal, like The Great Wall, is a marvelous project in the history of Chinese civilization. It not only facilitated water transport and irrigation but also helped promote the economic and cultural exchange between north and south. At present, the northern portion of the canal is now of little use as a means of communication between north and south. It is badly built, neglected and charged with the mud-laden waters of the Yellow river. The central and southern portions of the canal are very largely used while the 800 kilometers stretching from Jiangsu to Zhejiang is year-round shipping. Taking a boat trip along the canal offers tourists a panoramic view of the landscape of typical river towns, including arched stone bridges, riverside ancient buildings and breathtaking scenery.

The Dujiangyan Dam

The Dujiangyan Dam, 56 kilometres away from Chengdu City, is located by the Mingjiang River in the west of Chengdu Plain. In 250 B.C, Li Bing, garrison commander of Shujun Prefecture, and his son organized the construction of the famed Dujiangyan. It is the greatest irrigation system which is one of the oldest in the world and still in use today. The Dujiangyan Irrigation System has been bringing great benefits to agricultural production.

The system consists of three main sections: the Fish Mouth Water-Dividing Dam, the Flying Sand Fence, and the Bottle-Neck Channel.

The Water-Dividing Dam is also called Fish mouth because it looks like the thing after which it is named. The whole dam looks like a fish, and the front dam has a circular cone shaped like a fish mouth. The Fish mouth divides the water into two parts, 40 percent running into the inner river for irrigation in Chengdu areas and 60 percent running into the outer river as the main stream.
The Flying Sand Fence links the inner and outer canals. The fence helps adjust the water lever and keep the flow of the canal within safe limits. During the high water season, when the flood along the outer canal reaches the fence, the river begins to turn round fast and soon many whirlpools are formed. The volatile whirlpools sweep away sand and pebbles and, throw them into the outer canal. At present, reinforced concrete weir has replaced the ancient fence made of huge bamboo basket with stones and pebbles.

The Bottle-Neck Channel is functioned as the throat of the running water to inner canal. It was called that because the trunk canal was cut through the mountain into two parts which link up the inner canal for irrigation. The small part is later called Li Dui, which means an isolated hill. Chengdu looks like a large bottle and the trunk canal between the mountain and the hill takes shape of the bottleneck.

Due to the success of the project, the dam automatically diverts the Mingjiang River and channels it into irrigation canals. For many years the dam has continued to make the most of the water conservancy works. Two thousand years later today, the Dujiangyan is still playing a role to irrigate the western Sichuan plain as well as avoiding flooding.

Ling Canal

The Ling Canal is located in Xingan County, 66 kilometers north of the city of Guilin. There was a Chinese saying 'In the north there was a Great wall, in the south there was a Ling Canal'. It enjoys the same reputation as the Great Wall.

The Canal was scientifically designed more than 2,000 years ago by Chinese ancestors. In 221 B.C., Qin shi Huang (the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty) want to launch an expedition against the South for the unification of China .In 219 B.C., the emperor ordered Shi Lu to have a canal built to facilitate transport of grain.

The canal consists of two sections, the north and the south, totaling 34 kilometers. The canal system links the Xiang Jiang, a tributary of the Yangtze, with the Li River, a branch of the Pearl River, becoming a hub of communications between Central and South China. It not only facilitated water transport and irrigation but also helped promote the economic and cultural exchange among various nationalities and advance their unity.

The project consists of a plough share head, bifurcation dams, the south section, the north section, the Qin dyke, and a spill dam and lock. Each of the parts of the canal has a specific function. The complexity of the project is more easily understood when you are overlook from the top of the mountain.

The Hai Yang He in the upper reaches of the Xiang Jiang flows down from Hai Yang Shan for 43 kilometers to reach Mei Tan (now called bifurcation pool), where there is a 500-metre bifurcation dam consisting of two sections measuring 380 and 120 meters respectively. The Dam is a bit lower than the banks of the Xiang Jiang River, so that during the high water season, the flood may flow over the top of the dam and empties into the old course of the Xiang Jiang.

The highlight of the canal is its elegant designed ploughshare, also called Hua Zui, in the shape of a ploughshare. The ploughshare divides the water of the Hai Yang River into two parts, 30 percent running into the Li River through the South Channel and 70 percent into the Xiang Jiang through the North Channel. The starting point of the South Channel is 215 meters above sea level. This means a drop of 32 meters in a 30-kilometer course.

The Ling Canal was a great water conservancy project of China in ancient times and is also one of the oldest canals in the world. Everyone will be fascinated to view such a scientifically designed canal in such complicated terrain more than 2,000 years ago.

Touring the Grand Canal, Dujiangyan Dam and the Ling Canal, no visitors can help marveling at these grand ancient water conservancy projects which show the Chinese nation is a great nation and Chinese people are industrious, talented and courageous people.

Alaska Cruise Tour Before Or After You Cruise?

Though the land portion of both the Denali and the Yukon itineraries can be taken either before or after the cruise, we feel that it's better to take the land portion pre-cruise rather than post-cruise. Why? After several days of traveling around in the wilderness, it's nice to be able to get aboard a ship to relax and be pampered for a while.

Because of the distances that must be covered on some wilderness cruise tour itineraries, passengers often have to be rousted out of bed and ready to board the motor coach by, say, 7:30 a.m. And the day may seem to go on forever, with a stop to view this waterfall, or that river or mountain. Then, upon arrival at the next stop, in the early evening usually, the request is "Hurry and get cleaned up for dinner." By the time you've crawled into your new bed often quite late at night, you're beat. It's a nice kind of tired, as the saying goes, but it's tired nevertheless.

After a few days of that, it's great to get on a luxurious cruise ship, unpack just once and rise when you feel like it, comfortable in the knowledge that you haven't missed your transportation and that you'll still be in time to have a leisurely breakfast.

That, at any rate, is the conventional wisdom, and there's more of a demand for pre-cruise land packages than for post-cruise. Since the lines obviously can't always accommodate everybody on a land itinerary before the cruise (they're hoping to even out the traffic flow by having a like number of requests to go touring after the voyage), it's smart to get your bid in early.

Phuket Island - Popular Travel Destination in Thailand

Phuket has grown into one of the premier holiday destinations in South East Asia and is one of the busiest travel destinations of Thailand. It has replaced Bali as the most popular holiday island in the region.

What makes Phuket island such a great travel destination?

Phuket is first of all an inexpensive holiday destination. Phuket hotels, resorts and guesthouses can be found in all price categories and ratings and prices are considerably cheaper then what one would encounter in Europe or America.

Dining in restaurants or buying drinks in bars or clubs on Phuket is also less expensive then what most tourists are used to paying back in their home countries.

Phuket Beaches

The palm tree lined beaches of Phuket Island are of course world famous due to its crystal white sand and clear water of the Andaman Sea. Some of the nicest and most popular beaches found on Phuket Island are the beaches at Patong, Kamala, Karon, Kata and Nai Harn.

Phuket Nightlife

The Phuket nightlife is another reason why many tourists visit Phuket each year on holiday. Many tourists seem to keep coming back each year for especially the nightlife and bars of Phuket.

Most Phuket island nightlife venues can be found in Patong beach along the well known Soi Bangla. A number of large clubs are located along Bangla road in Patong including the very popular Tiger disco and the new Seduction Disco.

You can also find along Bangla road and the many small streets leading into Soi Bangla hundreds of beer bars. Each beer bar has a number of beautiful Thai ladies working for them who there to please the clients.

Phuket Shopping

Going shopping in Phuket in the past was not one of the most interesting activities for tourists due to the lack of a good variety of shops and products. Most of the shops sold the same tailor made clothing, bootleg movies and software and fake designer clothing.

Over the last few years however, a number of large shopping malls have opened on Phuket housing well known international retailers, unique local boutiques as well as international restaurant outlets such as Outback steakhouse and Burger King.

If you are going to visit Phuket for a holiday then please make sure to visit the brand new Phuket Junkceylon mall in Patong or the Central Carnival Mall along the Phuket by-pass road.

James is currently living on Phuket and is working on a number of projects. If you are looking for a great Phuket hotel then do consider staying at Club Bamboo Resort. Read more about Samui in his Samui Guide.

Thailand - The Golden Land

Thailand is often described as the 'Golden land' and no clearer is this depicted than in its hundreds of idyllic islands. South of Bangkok on the Kra Isthmus peninsula dotted between the Gulf of Thailand on one side and the Andaman Sea on the other, tourists are spoilt for choice. Thailand's islands are the prime reason it has such a strong tourism sector. Tropical Islands with clean white sand beaches, lapping warm waters, coconut trees and amazing scenery, the hundreds of thousands of visitors that come here each year can't be wrong. The Tsunami was devastating to some parts of Thailand's islands, such as Phi Phi, Phuket and Samui but the Thai people are resilient and have rebuilt the islands that were affected in this tragic event we all remember.

The islands known to the tourist, such as Samui, Phi Phi and the most known Phuket are a clear example of the diversity of the islands, their character defined by the tourists they attract. The diver loves Ko Tao, an up and coming island only a couple of hours north of Samui. Phuket is a loud island, accessible in that it has its own airport and has a wide range of accommodation needs. It has an abundance of bars, clubs and many of a seedy nature as does Pattaya. It is a great jump off point to the Similian islands for some world-class diving.

Samui, located on the east coast Gulf of Thailand is a clear example of how quickly Thai tourism develops as once a backpacker haven it now has its own international airport and is awry with world-class accommodation and facilities. It's a mesh between the busy Pattaya and the backpacker's Koh Phangan Island where the full moon parties of yesteryear are famed, having busy beaches such as Chaweng and Lami to quieter Bophut and Buddha beaches catering to every type of traveller.

The Phi Phi islands are famed from the appearance in the Movie 'the beach' and while some parts were affected in the tsunami, they offer an amazing destination experience for their raw beauty which never can be taken away. Racha Islands are popular with divers and day trippers as is the Coral Islands. Head to Ko Lanta for some Rest and relaxation, located between the gorgeous Krabi province and Phuket Island. So whether you head to Koh Chang, the newest popular Thai island destination due to its proximity to Bangkok or you fancy the popular young Thai destination hotspot of Koh Samet you'll have a fantastic time.

Thailand's islands offer something for everyone and every taste from Holistic sanctuary to eco-lodges, basic hut to 5 star all inclusive hotels. The islands landscapes are equally diverse, with many island interiors allowing great day trips on your mopeds to explore hiking trails and waterfalls. By night sip a drink in your hammock watching the red roaring sunsets, by day float in the calm warm waters. While Thailand is a safe friendly destination to visit is does have many large protests between military and opposing factions in the public realm so keep current on affairs in Thailand before going.

The eight place in my list would go to Bora Bora of French Polynesia. Including their beautiful beaches, one of their main attractions is their natives which showcase their ethnicity.

How to Look for Genuine Villa Vacation Rentals in Bali

Villa Vacation Rentals abound in the different places of tropical Bali. But how do you protect yourself from booking a luxury Bali Villa Rental that ends up in a tattered bungalow? Your Bali Vacation might end up not in Bali Villas but in some god forsaken shanty - this might seem an exaggeration but at times, some tourists experienced being intentionally misled by some of the unscrupulous villa agents online or off line. So you must always be sure to book your Bali Luxury Villa Rental legitimately.

Any Bali Vacation Rental agency or agent would want to recommend the heart of the Bali island called Seminyak for the prime location for your accommodation. This is a central happening place only minutes away from everything you might need in the course of your stay. It has a booming metropolis that has shopping centers, restaurants with international cuisine, and bars at night to keep you entertained. Some of the local merchandise are easily displayed for sale in the sidewalk by the native Balinese. They reflect some of the rich cultural background of the Balinese people and they usually explain to you in coherent English about their history or culture. There are a few cultural museums around the island if you would want to further learn about the humble history of Bali. You can just ask your booking agent to arrange a day tour in these museums.

Seminyak Villas might be the highest priced accommodations due to their best location and accessibility. Villa Rental Seminyak is usually guaranteed with beach front privacy and additional luxury packages like exclusive pools in their premises. Some Villa For Rent Seminyak has their very own courtyards and gardens that can showcase the rich flora of the region.

If you are more of the surfing enthusiast then you can ask your booking agent to place you in some Villa Rental Canggu. This little fish town is only about five minutes from the Bali International Airport and boast with some of the most swelling waves. Both professional and amateur surfers gather to go and enjoy the challenge of the big waves.

Special arrangements can be listed down by your traveling agent. Some of the local activities can even be part of your itinerary or day tours. You can try scuba diving, para-sailing, hiking, and other outdoor activities on the island. This can keep your stay more interesting and you get to soak in the sun a lot.

To have all your arrangements be assured of legitimacy and you actually getting the tropical vacation in your plans is to check your travel booking agent or agency to be a member of BVRA or Bali Villas Rental Association. This organization is a certifying body that vouches for a villa as being legitimate and existing in Bali. Also investigate your booking company and their background to better your chances of getting the Bali holiday you want. Look for their business registration details like business license, tax number, and contact details. It is even better if someone you know who has visited Bali know and recommend the villa to you.

The Best Winter Sun Holiday Destinations

If winter at home is too cold and soul destroying to contemplate, why not give yourself a late Christmas present of a few days out spent in one of these sizzling, sunny resorts instead?

Tenerife is ideal choice and little wonder. Four hours' flying deposits you into a world of warm breezes, volcanic black sand beaches and palm lined promenades that make chilling out a true art form. Winter? What winter?

Madeira is more sedate, languid and warmer still, with fewer crowds. Lush, mountainous and fragrant, it has fantastic waterfront lidos and secluded hotels looking out over fantastic Atlantic seascapes.

Cape Town enjoys peak season in the depths of our winter. Twelve hours flying- and no jetlag- puts you on top of Table Mountain, sipping wine against the last glow of sunset. World class beaches, nearby wineries and checking out big game could all be on your personal menu here.

Miami crackles and hums in the months just after Christmas, when it is absolutely at its best. Stretch limos cruise the length of South Beach, where waterfront bars rock and roll until the early morning hours. Stroll up Ocean Drive and you could literally bump into anyone. Pack light- the temperature will be up in the high twenties. Even a few days here will recharge the batteries.

Rio- the name says it all. World class beaches such as the famous Copacabana and immortal Ipanema, and of course, the unforgettable sights like Sugar Loaf Mountain form the magnificent backdrop for a scintillating escape. Coupled with the natural zest for life of the locals, Rio is an alluring lady where the heat is on in more ways than one.

Bali is serene, laid back and graceful, a place apart with its layered rice fields, smiling people and beautiful beaches lapped by calm, electric blue waters. A perfect mix of the ancient and arcane, served up with a smile and a series of dazzling sunsets.

Sydney is vibrant and open, with the mighty Harbour Bridge and Opera House, fabled beaches such as Bondi, and one of the best outdoor lifestyles anywhere in the world.

Cool and classy San Diego combines the surfing culture with some of the best year round temperatures in the States, not to mention the seventy miles of fabulous beaches.

Golf fans will really enjoy the Algarve as it has a host of fabulous greens, as well as mellow, year round temperatures. But for a real, out of this world vibe, Thailand's beach resorts like Phuket have sun, sea and smiles strung out in a matchless setting.

Visitors to Thailand can experience Thai culture by witnessing one of the Thai classical dance performances. These classical dance performances are generally performed by gracious Thai ladies wearing beautiful Thai local costumes.

These special Thai dances are fortunately still popular throughout Thailand including with the present younger Thai generations. Most resort areas and many hotels frequently offer these special Thai culture dance shows for foreign visitors.

Thai Greeting

The unique Thai gesture of greeting another person, the Wai, is especially one of the greatest aspects of the culture. The Wai is when a person joins both hands to either head or chest level while bending their head slightly towards their hands.

This way of greeting is especially done when a younger person greets an older person and it indicated a sign of respect to their elders. Employees would also Wai their superior's even if the supervisor or manager would be younger then themselves as the seniority of the other person would be respected.

Eight Hours in Cancun

Quick: You have only eight hours to spend in Cancun. What do you do? Oh, and you're not a college kid on spring break. It's not a tough question when you know all the wonderful offerings of this white-sanded, brilliant-beached paradise has to offer. If you have a few hours to spend because of a business meeting or layover, consider yourself lucky because there's still plenty to see! And next time, plan a longer vacation.

While it is still cool in the morning, begin by going to check out the Mayan ruins at Ruinas del Ray, a small Mayan fishing village. Since the bigger ruins will take you all day to visit, Ruinas del Rey is a great place to see some history of this incredible land in a short amount of time. After the ruins, a perfect stop is Xcaret. This "eco-archaeological theme park" features brilliant examples of the local flora and fauna, more on the history of the Mayans and ruins to explore, an aviary, an aquarium, and a nursery for baby sea turtles. If you have time later (doubtful), come back at night for performances of dance, music, and drama. Incredible!

After all that learning, it's time to get wet. While scuba diving tours are day-long commitments, you can still find plenty of ways to enjoy the water. On Isla Mujeres, you can visit Dolphin Discovery. After a short class, you can swim with the well-trained dolphins. This excursion only takes about one hour altogether. While there, take advantage of the water slides, rides, and pools. If you want to sacrifice another excursion and stay here, make sure to go snorkeling with the amazing tropical fish, rays, and sharks (don't worry, they're tame).

Next, hit the beach. The best ones are fronted by the big hotels and resorts but are on public property. Politely go through the lobby and head for the sand. Mujeres Bay is great for swimming. If you want to skip lunch, head to Rancho Loma Bonita. It is thirty miles south of Cancun, so this may take up a lot of your precious time. If you love horses, it's worth it. You can rent horses and ride along the beach. It is like being in your own movie.

Finish up your day with some shopping. Try the duty free UltraFemme, featuring European jewelry, perfume, and other goodies or La Isla Shopping Village. This is a quaint open-air mall, featuring small canals and an interactive aquarium.

There's so more to do in Cancun than knock back Tequila. While eight hours in Cancun can give you a taste, you'll no doubt be planning a trip back in the near future. For now, enjoy your escape to this paradise, even if only for a few hours.

Enid Glasgow has spent far more time than eight hours in Cancun and recommends that you do too. When in Cancun, she recommends luxury Cancun hotels like Hotel ME by Melia.

Phuket Remains One of the World's Great Destinations

In recent times, the tropical Island destination of Phuket has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. From refusing to let vacationers return to their homeland, arresting tourists on trivial charges and even a decrease in housing popularity but with all this in mind, Phuket still remains a wonderful tropical holiday destination.

Phuket's weather allows year round beach going activities with two distinct seasons. The first is known as the high season, based on the large number of tourists that flock to the Island during this time, and the other is called Summer Season with a self descriptive title.

During the high season, Phuket beaches enjoy a magical, tranquil environment. With the slight wind and weather approaching the Island from the North East, the famous West Coast beaches receive little or no waves, making crystal clear waters on bright white sands, almost too good to be true.

As the seasons change, the weather then comes from the opposite direction. This brings rougher conditions with sometimes-large waves suitable for experienced swimmers and even surfers. This time of year is still warm, in fact Phuket has a year round tropical climate and the temperature always hovers around the 30 degree Celsius mark.

The Summer Season is also known as the rainy season, however, this makes it sound like a time where it doesn't stop raining, but this couldn't be further from the truth. During this time, it does rain but some days reek glorious sunshine and high temperatures, just perfect for the beach. Visitors will get wet but just about everything that Phuket has is just as enjoyable at this time of year.

A well-established community backs every beach in Phuket. The main beaches of Patong, Karon, Kata and Surin, all have differing communities but all enjoy fine restaurants, great nightlife, wonderful shopping and an easy-going attitude.

Patong, in particular, is known for its nightlife along the busy Bangla Road area. Bars, clubs and restaurants line this street and at night it's blocked off from traffic and is a wonder to walk up and down and enjoy the sights.

One of the benefits of travelling to Thailand is its inexpensive shopping. Phuket is no different, however the up-market shopping malls are now cropping up all over the Island and prices are not what they used to be. Brand names such as Central Festival, Jungceylon, Tesco Lotus and a recently opened centre along the bypass road which claims to be a budget market, all offer international brand names in fashion, sports and just about anything that you would want to take home.

The waters and Islands surrounding Phuket are also easily accessible with a large variety of boating tours available. The jutting limestone Islands and caves, known as hongs in Thailand, are particularly beautiful with some caves accessible by either swimming or kayaking inside.

Right now, with the world in economic trouble, tourist numbers are down in Phuket. As a resident, this can be a nice time, however, the benefits to those that do chose to vacation now are unlimited. Bargains can be had all over the Island with vendors very willing to offer their goods or services at very reduced prices.

For those fortunate enough to be in a position to reside in topical paradise, the property market in Phuket is also in the same position. With a greatly reduced market, many property projects are now offering their properties at hugely reduced prices. Just about anything is available in terms of property and bargains from as little as 1.5 million baht (US$44,000) can be found, mind you, the other end of the spectrum is also here with luxury beachside properties in the million dollars range.

With all of this in mind and the bargains that are now available in Phuket there is no reason for anyone to stay away. Treat the locals with respect, enjoy the sunshine and hunt out a bargain, what better way is there to enjoy some time away from home.

The Countryside Can Be Cheaper If You Are After Budget Travel

If you're interested in adding a little budget travel to your itinerary, and who isn't once in a while, think about getting out into the countryside instead of spending all of your time in the big cities. No matter where you're traveling in the world, the countryside will almost always be cheaper than cities.

To maximize the benefit of this formula, you have to refine it even more, and plan when you'll be in the city and when you should spend time in the countryside.

If you're on a driving trip in your home country or one next door, this type of budget travel planning is easy. You've got your car, so you can do both city and countryside. Even when you want to spend time in a city, you can save money by just staying on the edge of the city or in a suburb.

Then you can drive in... or better yet, take public transportation in and avoid the frustration of trying to find parking, not to mention the cost. Parking can be expensive in almost any city in the world.

OK... maybe your time is limited, and you don't want to waste time getting into town. If you want to stay in the city rather than on the edge of it, remember that most cities will be cheaper on weekends when the business people are gone. Hotels sometimes have cheaper weekend prices, and there could be more going on in the way of plays and entertainment.

And if you think about it... the countryside will be cheaper during the week when most people are working.... so if you're a budget traveler, you want to plan to be in the city on weekends and in the countryside on weekdays. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are days that can save you money in the countryside.

And that will be especially true if the countryside you're visiting is a real get-away destination for those city folks you're trying to avoid. In this case you get that equal and opposite effect. If you're in a popular get-away destination, it will be more crowded and expensive on the weekends.

If you're traveling internationally or you've flown to your destination, you'll have to factor in the cost of a rental car or some kind of transportation to get to the countryside. You can take a bus or a train. Some European areas popular with tourists have trains and buses that run conveniently. Some even have train and bus routes that will take you on a circle tour to some of the prettier and smaller towns.

In the United State, public transportation isn't as good, but it is improving, so check around. In Asia, public transportation is good in some countries and spotty in others. In Australia, it's probably easiest to drive. It always pays to ask at the tourist information offices if you're interested in something like this.

So see, you don't have to give up the sights you want to see to trim your budget, you just have to plan smart to save. Lay out a calendar, and work your itinerary so that you spend most of your weekends in those cities and the weekdays in the country.

You'll be money ahead. That's budget travel made easy!

Seven Tips For Planning a Trip to Europe

If you're planning an independent trip to Europe, then read my tips to ensure that you have a great trip.

One: Do not try to see and do too much.

You may end up actually seeing very little. I think it is better to see more of fewer countries/regions and see them properly. You may not want to stay in one location for your whole trip. However if you choose carefully it may be possible to do several day trips from one central location. If you do decide to tour, consider spending at least two nights in some of your destinations. It can be quite tiring being on the move every day, packing and unpacking.

Two: Decide on mode of transport.

Driving will give you more flexibility but can be daunting at times and is not recommended if you mainly wish to visit cities. You may decide to take your own car if you live in Europe. If you fly you can hire a car. Beware of extra charges for additional drivers, insurance excesses, airport charges, out of hours charges etc. I always book a hire car through a UK company, with no excess. If you use a budget airline try to only book direct flights. If you book a two let journey, the budget airlines will not assist you, as they only operate a point to point service. Public transport is pretty good in most of Europe. There are also several budget airlines you can use between countries e.g. Ryanair and Easyjet.

Three: Be aware of security of possessions.

Use a money belt, hotel safe etc. Do not have all your money/cards in one purse or wallet. If you lose it you are in trouble. This happened to me when I was in Milan: I was travelling alone and was left penniless. My credit card company did transfer funds to me but it took 24 hours! I had to borrow 10 euros from the hotel receptionist. Make sure you have travel insurance and if there is an incident get a written report from the local police station, to enable you to make a claim.

Four: Try to learn at least a few words of the language.

This will be greatly appreciated. My French is what you might describe as school girl (that was 25 years ago) but I do try when in France. Often I receive the reply in English but at least I tried. I always apologise if I cannot speak the language. I don't assume that the person I am talking to should speak English, I ask in their language if they speak English. As I do have a Scottish accent, I try to speak more slowly and clearly than usual, certainly not raising my voice.

Five: Don't be too structured.

You should allow some time just to wander around, enjoy a leisurely lunch. You do have to plan an itinerary, or you can just waste a lot of time, but it doesn't have to be written in stone! Allow yourself the opportunity to be spontaneous.

Six: Don't just stick to tourist traps.

Try to visit some authentic local restaurants, markets, villages, etc. where you will meet local people, rather than just other tourists. Surely part of the reason for going abroad it to experience at least a little of the local flavour, not just spend all your time with other tourists.

Seven: Book your accommodation in advance.

This may mean that you miss out on a charming establishment you come across in your travels, (you could always stay there on your another trip). However it will mean that you don't waste precious time going from hotel to hotel trying to find a room, having to arrive early enough at your next destination to look for accommodation. I am not even convinced that you save money by last minute searches.
